Cash on Delivery Online Shopping in Pakistan: How It Works

Posted by Hassan Abbas Mir on

Cash on Delivery, usually shortened to COD, is the most common way Pakistanis pay for online orders. Instead of paying in advance, you hand cash to the courier when your parcel arrives. Here is how it actually works and what to watch for.

How the process works, step by step

  • You place an order on the store's website and enter your address and mobile number.
  • The store confirms your order, usually by call, SMS or WhatsApp.
  • Your parcel is dispatched through a courier such as TCS, Leopards, M&P or PostEx.
  • The courier arrives at your address, you pay the exact amount in cash, and take the parcel.

Why COD is popular in Pakistan

Card penetration is still low, and many buyers are cautious about paying a store they have not used before. COD removes that risk: if the parcel never arrives, you have not lost money. It also lets buyers without a bank account or card shop online, which is a large part of the market.

What to check before you place a COD order

  • Give a correct, reachable mobile number. Most failed deliveries happen because the courier cannot reach the buyer. Keep your phone available for the confirmation call.
  • Write a complete address. Include house or shop number, street, area and city. A vague address is the second biggest cause of failed delivery.
  • Keep exact cash ready. Couriers often cannot give change.
  • Check the exchange policy. Ask what happens if the item arrives damaged or is the wrong product.
  • Note the delivery window. Most Pakistani stores deliver in 2 to 5 working days depending on city.

Can you open the parcel before paying?

This depends on the courier and the store, and it is worth asking before you order. Many couriers do not allow opening before payment, so instead check the parcel from the outside for damage, and contact the store immediately if something is wrong when you open it.

How to judge whether a smaller store is trustworthy

Big marketplaces are not the only safe option. For smaller independent stores, look for a real phone number you can call, a physical address, active social media with recent posts and real customer comments, a clearly stated exchange policy, and of course COD as a payment option. A store that offers COD is carrying the risk itself, which is a reasonable signal of confidence.
